An executive decision...and its aftermath

On Tuesday evening, Andy declared that he had had enough of sleeping on the sofa. It was time for the Linns to move back upstairs!

We've got a video monitor, and Patrick is on an apnea monitor that sounds a *very* loud alarm, so we figured that we'd have him sleep in his crib. When we carried him up to bed, it was the first time that Patrick had been in his room.

9:30 PM - We tuck Patrick into his crib.

10:30 - We climb into bed, Andy picks up the monitor receiver and can't stop staring at it. We hear everything - Patrick's breathing, the sound of him sucking on his pacifier, and we see our little glow worm laying in his bed. Andy turns to me and said, "I'm so nervous. I'll be awake all night listening for him." Famous last words.

10:36 - I hear Patrick whining so I head down the hall to check on him.
10:50 - Check on Patrick.
11:15 - I lay in bed awake listening to Patrick on the monitor. Andy sleeps.
10:50 - Check on Patrick. Again. Pick him up, rock him to sleep. Patrick wakes up as soon as I put him in the crib.
11:30 - Time for more food. Head down the hall and feed Patrick.
12:00 - Patrick has finished his bottle and is WIDE awake. Unsuccessfully try putting him in his crib. Head back to bed.
12:30 - Back in Patrick's room. Finally rocked him to sleep (I think), go downstairs to pump.
1:00 - Go back upstairs, climb into bed. Patrick is crying for more food. Andy is snoring.
1:05 - Warm up another bottle and go back into Patrick's room.
1:30 - Andy stumbles into the room - "Hey, how are things going?" He doesn't realize that I haven't gone to sleep yet.

I handed Andy the baby and went to bed. Andy had a rough shift - Patrick was awake until 4:30 AM. We have a nocturnal baby.

  3. I love the play by play: "Andy sleeps".. Reminds me of the blog post about your marriage proposal, where we heard both sides of the story, hour by hour! I love Patrick's nursery! Where did you find the animal pictures??

  4. Have you thought about a bassinet or co-sleeper to keep in your room next to your bed? That way if he wakes up and need something as simple as a pacifier, you can just roll over to check on him and then fall back to sleep. Our son stayed in the co-sleeper until 3 or 4 months, until he seemed ready to sleep through the night in his room alone. Our daughter just turned 3 months and she is still in our room. Very convenient.

  5. Kelly - Patrick is on a monitor, so there isn't a good place to put a bassinet in our room where we can both reach/feed him at night.(It'd be easier if we could all sleep in our room!) We tried it the first night and it was a mess. The nursery is small enough that we can leave the monitor in one place and reach the crib, changing table, and rocker.
Natalie - I was thinking of the engagement story when I made this timeline :) The pictures are from etsy - Little Monkey Doodles. I love them, too!
