Tipping the scales!

This morning, Andy and I headed to the hospital early so that we could catch the orthopedist. We hadn't met her yet, and we wanted to talk to her about her plans for Patrick and his casts. We arrived to find a hungry little guy who was wide awake and ready to escape his isolette for awhile.

After breakfast, Patrick had his casts removed. Since we haven't gotten an accurate weight for him for the past few days, the nurse weighed him after the casts were off. Our little guy is getting big - he now tips the scales at a whopping 5 pounds, 2.5 ounces! So long preemie clothes!

The casts they put on these little babies are pretty cool - to remove them, the doctor just unwraps them. Patrick's left leg was looking good so the orthopedist decided not to put a new cast on that one. She was also happy to see how much his right foot has straightened out. Usually, babies with a club foot have a series of seven casts (each 5 days long), but the doctor thinks that Patrick's foot will straighten out with fewer than that. Once all of the casts are done, P-Man will need to have his right interior ligament cut in order to release the pressure holding his foot inward. After that, he will have to wear special shoes with a bar in order to keep his feet in the new, straightened-out position.

Patrick shows off first set of casts and his first quilt from Marmie!
